Incomplete Delusion...An Excerpt

PROLOGUE

"Just give up, already!" Sarah mumbled to herself as she scanned the latest in a series of e-mails from her friend, Cass. Could David not see he was wasting his time trying to find her? It was over. Sarah had moved on. Her new life was a world away from the man she had loved and had at one time believed loved her to distraction, a man she might even have committed to for life. Yet here was her
best friend warning her yet again that David continued to actively search for her, obsessively hounding her friends in an attempt to obtain information on her whereabouts. Sarah was determined never to allow that to happen, not in this lifetime.

In light of the circumstances, their split had been acrimonious, to say the least. Seven months into their relationship, Sarah had discovered David had been seeing a woman he had at one time been close with but, according to him, had not seen in years. As with most cheaters, once he was caught, he had begged her forgiveness and sworn up and down it would never happen again.

David hailed from several generations of wealthy commerce giants and bragged unabashedly that, as an only child, he always got what he wanted. Unfortunately for Sarah, that included her. Being from privilege, he felt entitled to an ‘occasional misstep,’ and believed Sarah should simply let it go and move on.

When David informed his parents of their breakup, his mother had invited Sarah to tea, and in her sweet-as-honey voice, explained that it was Sarah’s responsibility to forgive him; after all, she might one day become his loyal and dutiful wife. Sarah made it equally clear to her, and later to David, that her motto was ‘once a cheater, always a cheater’ and there would be no second chance.

As a consequence of his betrayal, Sarah’s self-esteem had taken a nasty hit. It had been a bitter pill to swallow. After much soul-searching and self-affirmation that she remained a strong, independent woman, Sarah had decided to leave the pain in the past where it belonged and to focus solely on the road ahead. At such a low point in her life, and desperately craving a change of scenery, she had packed up her belongings, said goodbye to her friends and her hometown and headed south to Virginia to begin anew.
