Kindle Unlimited: Too Limited!
Hello friends,
Time for a good, old fashioned rant. I've complained in the past about Amazon's Kindle Select Program whereby readers pay $9.99 monthly for a membership which allows them to read as many Amazon-listed KU e-books as they wish. That's a great plan...for readers! For authors, not so much.
In Kindle Select, Amazon pays authors on a per-page basis, a program which is geared toward the customer, but leaves authors wondering why the heck they joined. Once you agree to join Kindle Select following the publication of a novel, you are locked into the program for a three-month period. Of course, some months are pretty good, as pages are read fairly regularly. At other times, things are more quiet. I should mention that whenever I list a novel with Kindle Select, actual Amazon book sales drop drastically, while per-page reading numbers go up.
It's in the quiet times that I usually decide to let my Kindle Select membership lapse and publish my

Book One: "You're Still Mine"
For those of you who are new to this blog, this week I will be reintroducing the three books which comprise my 'Safe In His Arms' series. Book one, "You're Still Mine," touches upon the delicate subject of spousal abuse. While writing this fictional story, my goal was to deal with the subject in a realistic yet kind manner. Remember, if you are being abused, do what you need to do to get yourself out of such a dangerous situation. Your loved ones need you to be safe and healthy, especially if you have children who are being exposed to such violence.

PROLOGUE
This
couldn't be happening! She'd been assured by the Courts that he
would serve a minimum five years, yet here he was walking the streets
- or soon would be
- following a paltry three and a half years in federal prison!
On
the very day he was found guilty by a jury of his peers, Meg had
registered with SAVIN, the Statewide Automated Victim Information and
Notification program, hence the automated message which had greeted
her this morning informing her that her ex-husband, the man who'd
nearly taken her life, the man who'd instilled in her a fear of men
in general, was to
be
released this coming Monday.
In
her estimation, she had three days to come up with a solid plan to
get herself away from this town, away from him if she had any hope of
saving herself. Meg wasn't one prone to exaggeration in general, and
definitely not when it came to her fear of Rob. She knew with
absolute certainty that immediately upon his release, Rob would be on
her like a dog with a bone. Only this time, he'd be sure to finish
the job. Unable to come up with a quick solution, Meg needed to
think, and think fast! She decided to come at this systematically.
First
things first. Money. She had $2,500 in savings and another $1,100
in her chequing account. Of course, if she left town immediately, it
would mean skipping this month's mortgage payment, but what did it
matter? Rob would likely claim the house as his anyway. Laws and
injunctions were of no consequence to an animal like him. He was a
law unto himself and defied anyone to say differently.
Meg
had married Rob when she was twenty-five. He was a couple years
older than her and had impressed Meg with his worldly maturity. He'd
often boasted of his travels and street-wise education,

The birds are singing
Hello friends,
As I sit in my favourite room, enjoying my morning coffee, I reflect on the upcoming day. There are so many things I should be doing: Working on my new novel, planting my garden, cleaning the house... And then I hear the birds sing, and I stay exactly where I am. There is nothing more important than this!
I hope you also take the time to enjoy the beauty that surrounds you.

Are you a 'pantser' or a 'plotter'?
(Repost of an article by A. Vidal)
Hello friends,
Just so I'm clear, I am definitely a pantser. Yes, folks, when I write, I fly by the seat of my pants. Of course, I always take the time to develop and put down notes about my characters, their family history, ages, places of birth, etc... But when it comes to the actual story and its twists and turns, I just let myself fly!
Hope you enjoy the article as much as I did.

“Pantsers and plotters” is a shorthand phrase used by writers to describe their process in creating a story. Plotters are the ones who prepare an extensive outline, chapter by chapter, sometimes scene by scene, before beginning to write the story. They have already worked out the plot, the twists, the climax and the conclusion before writing that first sentence. Plotters are organized, efficient and highly productive people.
I’m not a plotter.
Pantsers, or those who fly by the seat of their pants, or, more elegantly, “fly into the mists” have an idea about a

Hello friends,
I've been working hard on my newest novel. Sometimes it flows; sometimes it stalls. Today, ideas are flowing. Let's hope this streak continues! After all, it's not easy to come up with ways to kill off characters. I'm really just a tender soul at heart!
Enjoy your day, wherever you are!

Happy Sunday!
It's a beautiful sunny day here in Lanark, Ontario Canada. The snow is just about gone, but unfortunately, the weather channel is forecasting two to four centimeters of the white stuff tonight. Let's hope this is just a terrible mistake. We need nice clear days in preparation of garden time! I've got a few plants started in my mini greenhouse: pickling cucumbers, tomatoes, lavender, strawberries and hot peppers. Gives me hope that I'll soon be out there getting my hands dirty!

More Writing Tips...
Dear readers,
I hope I'm not boring (or insulting) anyone by posting occasional writing tips. I suppose that, as a writer, I do at times obsess about proper grammar, and my goal is to help, not hurt. You may note, for example, that as a Canadian, I always use 'our' as opposed to 'or' in words such as behaviour, favourite, etc.. This has often given me pause as I work on my novels and wonder whether the

My Bee
Hello friends,
This post has absolutely nothing to do with writing...well, almost. What I did last night will shock those who know me; Heck, I shocked myself!
Last night, I got a tattoo! Yes, folks, my very first - and only - tattoo. The truly great thing is that it was done by my very own daughter, Nat, who is a tattoo artist with The Skin Within in Cornwall, Ontario Canada. And what a great job she did!
Was it painful, you may ask? Let me explain it this way... Because I wanted the tattoo to be hidden from the world, I asked that she do it on top of my foot. In fairness to Nat, she warned me the top of the foot was just about the most painful area on the body to get tattooed, but I insisted. Mother knows best, right? Wrong! It hurt like the devil.
The reason I chose a bee is because my husband of thirty-eight years has always called me Bee. In the picture, you'll see the bee is holding a quill. That was Nat's interpretation of me as an author.
But the pain was definitely worth it and I would do it all over again - if I had to, which I won't! LOL

Meet Juanita!
Dear readers,
When my husband and I first retired, I started a travel blog titled 'Juanita's Journey,' in which I shared our adventures with other lovers of all things travel.
Following three years on the road, we put our travels on hold in order to renovate our home, but have now decided to once again hit the road starting this fall, end of October 2016 to be precise. I have therefore re-activated 'Juanita's Journey' and will once again be posting to my travel blog, in addition to 'BookMe1956.'
I hope you'll join us as we once again kickstart our travels. To facilitate toggling between my two blogs, I have created a 'Link to Juanita' tab within this blog. All you need to do is click on the tab and you will be transported to 'Juanita's Journey.' When you're done catching up on our travel news, simply click on the 'Link to BookMe1956' and you'll be taken right back to this blog. Easy peasy!
Enjoy your day, and remember to read a book!

Here's what I think...
Hello friends,
Recently, I read a blog post by a moderately well-known author who, for the purposes of this post, shall remain nameless. (In truth, I really don't want to give her recognition by naming her!) This author ranted about all the 'wannabe' writers out there who self-publish novels and who, according to her, are horrible writers. She actually seemed insulted by the thought that anyone would actually go the distance if they'd not been picked up by a traditional publisher.
Well, not to put too fine a point on it, but who is she - or anyone else for that matter - to turn her nose up at those who aspire to become a published writer and who can now, thanks to the world of self-

Rewrites are a pain!
Hello friends,
The end of another weekend is upon us, although as a retiree, I can't say it makes much difference to me. (Sorry, couldn't help adding that!)
Today, I spent a couple hours working on my current novel, "A Kindness Returned." This is my fifth romantic suspense and I must say, the most frustrating so far.
As an author, my mind is constantly conjuring up stories, twists and turns in plots, finding new ways to hurt someone, deciding how to kill off a character... After a bit, the story usually settles

Decisions, Decisions...
Dear readers,
On this sunny, but very cold, Canadian winter day, I've been working on my current novel, most likely to be titled "A Kindness Returned." The one thing I never have a difficult time with is the cover, but in this case it's been a nightmare.
I mean if your book deals with love, your cover could portray lovers kissing, or a man and woman posed in a sexually suggestive scene. But how do you portray kindness?
At first, I considered a picture of two hands, one reaching out to the other. Then I scratched that.

How To Write Scary Scenes...
Hello friends,
As a writer of fictional romantic suspense thrillers, I constantly need to come up with scenes that will frighten my readers. While perusing the internet for helpful advice on doing just that, I came upon this great post by AJ Humpage. This is part I. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

How to Write Scary Scenes – Part 1
It’s an age old question. How do you scare your reader out of their wits?
Whether you are writing a horror story or a ghost/supernatural story or indeed any story that you want to illicit plenty of emotions – especially the scary ones – the ability to scare the reader or invoke fear, helps to makes the story all the more realistic.
But scaring people isn’t easy.
The art of scaring your reader is all about what you DON’T reveal, as opposed to what

Has Spelling Gone The Way Of The Dinausaur?
Hello friends,
Today, I'm posting what could be called a rant. Like most of you out there, I subscribe to social media, Facebook being my favourite. One can spend hours reading stories and laughing at funny posters or animal videos. A great de-stressor! Personally, I love it. Except for one tiny thing...
The sweetest or funniest article or poster can turn me off in an instant when it is full of spelling or grammar errors. Everyone makes mistakes, you say? I agree, myself included. However, the

Do you have a book within you?
Dear readers,
Friends and acquaintances often share with me their deepest, darkest wish: That is, to write a book. Inevitably, the next words out of their mouth: The fear that they won't be able to pull it off. So I've decided to share with you a little about my writing ambitions over the years.
I'd wanted to pen a novel for well over thirty years. At first it was a passing thing. Every time I put my nose in a book (which was all the time!), I would think how nice it would be to become an author. The feeling would soon pass. Fast forward twenty years when I realized this was no silly dream; I

I'm Back!
Hello friends,
My apologies for neglecting my blog of late. It seems I'm taking longer than usual this year to recover from Christmas. But I have decided the time has come to dig in my heels and start working on my novel once again.
My current novel, as most of you are aware, is "A Kindness Returned." So far, I've only written a few chapters, but I keep changing the story in my mind, so it could end up a complete re-write. Who knows...
I've also not yet worked on the book cover. I find I tend to get energized once that is complete. Guess

Happy New Year!
Dear readers,
Here we are, at the start of another new year. How time flies! I remember sixteen years ago when there was so much fear and panic over the upcoming new millennium. We all worried about whether or not banks would fail, computers would crash, whether life would go on as we'd all come to know and live it. Meanwhile, here we are sixteen years later. Nothing much has changed, for the most part.
The past sixteen years have not been without their challenges, turmoil, and war. It is for this reason I would like to wish each and every one of you peace in 2016. No more pain. No more tears. Hold those dear to you very close and tell them you love them. Today.
I wish you all only the best of 2016.
Sincerely,
Lise
