“No doubt about it, killing is a dirty business, he mused, as he cleaned up after his latest victim. A meaningful kill, in his opinion, had to result in a bloody mess. The bloodier, the better. Otherwise, it meant he had let himself down, had rushed things. And he never rushed a kill. Ever.”
 — Excerpt from local author, Lise Guilbault’s latest novel, Look Behind You.

Lise Guilbault admits she’s a romantic at heart, and that’s one of the many reasons she’s taken to writing novels of this genre. But there is a twist – she likes a good suspense, so she’s added some creeps to her books. All of her novels are romantic suspense/thrillers.

My books are psychological thrillers, though, not of the horror type. No monsters for me; just creeps! Author Lise Guilbault

“I guess I would say I'm a romantic at heart, but romance is just not enough for me. I need some thrills and chills to go along with the happy-ever-after,” she writes in an email exchange with this newspaper. “My books are psychological thrillers, though, not of the horror type. No monsters for me; just creeps!”

Her novel, You're Still Mine is the first in the 'Safe In His Arms' series. This novel deals with
domestic abuse at its worst and has been very well received, she writes. “The description touches on this topic and seems to attract buyers.”

The second novel in the same series is "You're Not His," also a romantic thriller. This one is dealing with a dangerous, highly deranged perpetrator.

“My third novel in the series, "Look Behind You," will be released on Aug. 31, 2015. This novel is about a fiercely independent woman who leaves the city behind to start her own hunting and fishing lodge, only to be pursued by a serial killer.”

Guilbault says she always tries to mention a lake or road in Lanark County. Although the settings are not Lanark based, she said using a name from the area personalizes the books for her. “A little bit of home in each novel, I guess.”

Guilbault is an indi author, meaning she has an independent publisher. She said she published her first novel at the age of 59 because, “I've wanted to write a novel for as long as I can remember, but was terrified to take the plunge. But as I got older - and then retired four years ago - I decided it was now or never.  ‘Incomplete Delusion’ was my first published novel.”  Her first novel is a stand-alone, for which her daughter drew the cover.

“Once I started writing, it was like a door was opened which I could not close. Years of ideas came flooding out. I literally wake up in the middle of the night with ideas for a new novel or how to make changes to the one I'm currently working on,” she stated.

“Although my husband and I moved to Lanark just over two years ago, we knew the area well (had relatives who spent over 40 years in this area). After we retired, we sold our home in White Lake in order to become full-time RV-ers. We decided it was not a good idea to continue travelling in this way without owning a home somewhere in Canada. As Canadians, should one of us become ill while in the U.S., we would need to return to our home country, and could not very well live in an RV should something happen in the middle of winter!  We found a small fixer-upper in Lanark County and have spent the past two years working at getting it to where it is comfortable for us. We plan to take up travelling once more in approximately one year.”

As to where Guilbault’s books can be purchased, she is currently selling them online, via Amazon.  All her novels are available in both digital and paperback formats. They are available in 53 countries around the world.

“I'm excited to say I made my very first sale to someone in Japan recently,” she wrote.
